Abstract

The School-AP_IT ontology models the Italian school system, providing a formal vocabulary for describing educational institutions, educational service delivery points, and the relationships between them. The ontology distinguishes between Educational Institutions — autonomous legal and administrative entities pursuant to D.P.R. 275/1999 — and Service Delivery Points, i.e. the physical locations (branches, detached premises, sections) where teaching activities actually take place. The main educational cycles defined by Italian law are modelled: the first cycle (preschool, primary, and lower secondary school), the second cycle (lyceums, technical institutes, and vocational institutes), and adult education (CPIA, evening sections, and prison sections). The ontology is part of the OntoPiA network and is aligned with the COV (organisations), CLV (locations and addresses), and RO (roles) ontologies.

An upper secondary educational institution belonging to the Technical Education system (Technological Sector). With the reorganization under D.P.R. No. 88 of March 15, 2010, the historical denomination merged into the "Transport and Logistics" track. This institution has a unique regulatory exception: in addition to the Ministry of Education, the curriculum must comply with the international STCW standards of the IMO (International Maritime Organization) and requires an ISO 9001 quality certification validated by the Ministry of Transport to issue a professional qualification valid for registration as a seafarer.

The 'Liceo' forms part of upper secondary education. Unlike technical institutes, which focus on technological and economic training, and professional institutes, which focus on services and industry, the Liceo's primary purpose is to provide students with the cultural and methodological tools necessary for an in-depth understanding of reality. The Liceo is well-suited to continuing university studies, although this is not its only purpose. The structure of the Liceo is currently regulated by DPR N. 89 of 15 March 2010 ('Regolamento di riordino dei licei'), implementing the so-called 'Gelmini Reform'.

The system includes a traditional track (which encompasses the study of Latin) and two specific variants: the "Applied Sciences" (Scienze Applicate) option, which replaces Latin with an enhanced focus on computer science, mathematics, physics, and natural sciences; and the "Sports" (Sportivo) track (introduced by D.P.R. No. 52 of March 5, 2013).
