The thesaurus for the categorization of disciplinary subjects was created to identify general categories under which indexing the places and events of culture, to facilitate the search and navigation of information by users. The sources behind the identification of the categories are: the list of scientific-disciplinary areas identified by the Ministerial Decree of 4 October 2000 (http://www.miur.it/UserFiles/115.htm), the Thesaurus Pico (http://www.culturaitalia.it/pico/thesaurus/4.3/thesaurus_4.3.0.skos.xml) and the New Subjectory of Florence (http://thes.bncf.firenze.sbn.it/ricerca.php). It was generally decided to use the MIUR list of scientific-disciplinary sectors as the source of the categorization (with some additions coming from the other Thesaurs), with the exception of the Art sector, for which the subdivision proposed by Pico http://culturaitalia.it/pico/thesaurus/4.1#arte has been resumed (see Thesaurus Pico - cosa - aree disciplinari - arte, with the relative subdivisions into applied arts, visual arts, performing arts), which allows the complexity of the artistic heritage to be represented with greater precision. The categories have been structured on three levels of progressive specialization, starting from a first level that includes 25 macro-areas, up to the third level that provides for a more capillary disciplinary specialization. Each category identified starting from the MIUR denomination of the scientific-disciplinary sectors is aligned in a "weak" way, where possible, with the URIs of the corresponding terms in PICO and in the New Subjectory of Florence. The English version of the terms of the vocabulary has been obtained, for the MIUR items, from the site of the CUN (National University Council); for the PICO items, from its RDF/XML version. In the automatic mapping process, out of a total of 447 entries of the controlled vocabulary, perfect correspondence was found in 422 entries, with 9 duplications, i.e. in 9 entries two distinct translations in English were inserted, one from MIUR source and one from PICO source, for a total of 413 single translations. The remaining 34 entries were translated manually.
