Public body with constitutional relevance (art. 114) representing a community of residents living in a specific territory. It has its own powers and functions as well as an autonomous legislation as envisaged for by the Italian Constitution and constitutional laws. The initial 19 regions set up in 1946 by the Italian Constitution became 20 in 1963 following the separation of the region Abruzzi and Molise into two: Abruzzi and Molise; 5 out of the 20 regions have a special statutes and one of these, namely Trentino-Alto Adige, is formed by the only two Italian autonomous provinces: Trento and Bolzano. These have the same legislative powers as the regions with special legal status. In order to respect linguistic minorities, Trentino-Alto Adige and Valle d'Aosta are reported with the bilingual denomination of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and Valle d'Aosta/Vallée d'Aoste.
Ente territoriale autonomo rappresentativo di una collettività stanziata su un determinato territorio, dotato di propri poteri e funzioni e di un ordinamento autonomo secondo i principi fissati dalla Costituzione (art. 114 Cost.).Lo Stato italiano è diviso in 20 regioni, di cui 5 sono dotate di uno statuto speciale di autonomia (art. 116 Cost.), tra queste il Trentino-Alto Adige e la Valle d'Aosta, nel rispetto delle minoranze linguistiche, sono riportate con le denominazioni bilingue di Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol e Valle d'Aosta/Vallée d'Aoste.
